FUDCon Tempe: Scouting for Pwnie Stables
As many people know, Ryan Rix and I are working on a bid for FUDCon to come to lovely Tempe, Arizona at Arizona State University. We took a trip to campus yesterday and met with two of the awesome guys from the ASULUG, checked out some of the options for conference space, walked down Mill Avenue, and generally had a lovely time. Here’s some of what we saw.
- Cookiez. ke4qqq won’t actually believe that this place exists.
- The Library. Because having “Library” on your credit card bill is better than having “Hooters” on your credit card bill. (Of course, you could go to Hooters, directly behind The Library, if you really choose to.)
- Outside of the Brickyard on Mill.
- Courtyard in the center of buildings that make up the Brickyard on Mill
- CSE Building. Woot! This is our preferred location – minutes from the hotel, where all the CS students are studying hard, right on Mill Avenue in the heart of downtown Tempe. (Yes, I could work as an ad writer.)
- One of the classrooms @ Brickyard on Mill
- Lobby of engineering building @ Brickyard on Mill
- Front Door – engineering building @ Brickyard on Mill

- Windows Academic Program. This poster needs to have Fedora posters next to it, plz!
- Chalkboard outside the door of the Computing Commons @ ASU. Just need some Mizmo chalk magic here to make some Fedora goodness!
- ASU Computing Commons
- More conference space @ Memorial Union.
- One of many conference rooms @ ASU Memorial Union
- Pima Auditorium @ ASU Memorial Union
- One of many conference rooms @ Memorial Union
- View from upstairs @ ASU Memorial Union.
- rrix takes a rrrrrrest in the rrrrrelaxing lounge chairs outside the Memorial Union. He’s thinking, “zomg, I will be a student here soon!”
- Thirsty Dog Hot Dogs and Beer vs. Gordon Biersch. We know who the hands-down winner is here.
- In case you can’t give it up.
- Brand X Custom Tees, across the street from the hotel.
- Restaurants in Tempe.
- Rula Bula Irish Pub’s patio on the right; Tempe Mission Palms on the left. That’s right: Stumbling Distance.
- One of the restaurants @ Tempe Mission Palms.
- Center courtyard of Tempe Mission Palms.
- Outdoor fireplace @ Tempe Mission Palms. Would be awesome in January, not as awesome when it’s 105 outside.
- Trees in the Tempe Mission Palms courtyard.
- Lobby of Tempe Mission Palms.
- Bar inside Tempe Mission Palms.
- Fountain outside Tempe Mission Palms Hotel. Building in the distance that says ASU on it? Brickyard on Mill, one of the proposed locations for FUDCon goodness.
- “A” Mountain. (As opposed to… a mountain.)
All in all – it was a very informative, promising trip – and our friends Adam and Zach from ASULUG will be getting back to us on some details about arranging space in the next few days.
